Attractions

Many of St Albans attractions are located outside the main City centre and in the outlying villages. The list of attractions below is not fully inclusive of what there is to see in St Albans. The majority of the journey details below are from St Albans City Centre (St Peters Street) and St Albans City Railway Station. However the other rail station that serves St Albans is the St Albans Abbey on the Abbey Flyer line, which serves stations from Watford Junction. The St Albans Abbey station is located at the bottom of Holywell Hill.

For buses towards St Albans City Centre, come out of the station onto Holywell Hill, cross over the road and turn right up the hill towards the town. A bus stop is situated a short distance away from which you can get a number of buses up the hill to St Albans City Centre (St Peters Street) where you can then change to one of the bus services which goes to your chosen attraction.  Services which will take you up Holywell Hill include Redline S4 and S5, Arriva 321, and Uno S8 and 652.

Alternatively you can walk up Holywell Hill to the City Centre which takes approximately 10 minutes.

 

St Albans Organ Theatre: 320 Camp Road, St Albans, AL1 5PE

The Theatre is located approximately two miles (32 minute walk) from St Albans City Centre or a 20 minute walk from St Albans City Railway Station.

Alternatively take the Uno S1 bus from St Albans City Centre or from St Albans City Railway Station, and get off on Roland Street in Cell Barnes, and then walk about 7 minutes to the Theatre.

 

Verulamium Museum, Roman Theatre and Gorhambury House: St Michael’s Street, St Albans, AL3 4SW: Bluehouse Hill, St Albans, AL3 6AE: Off Bluehouse Hill, St Albans, AL3 6AH

Verulamium Museum, the Roman Theatre of Verulamium and Gorhambury House are about a 20 minute walk from St Albans City Centre. For all three attractions walk towards the Cathedral and follow signs for Verulamium Park.

Verulamium Museum is situated on the other side of the Lake, near the Inn on the Park, Splash Park, and other leisure facilities.

The Roman Theatre is located just off Bluehouse Hill. As you leave The Verulamium Museum walk towards St Michaels Street, then turn left and walk to the end of the road which should be Bluehouse Hill. The road leading to the Roman Theatre is then directly opposite.

Access to Gorhambury House (old and new) is through entrance to the Roman Theatre of Verulamium.

Alternatively you can get the Arriva 300 bus from St Albans City Centre, towards Hemel Hempstead and get off at St Michael’s Village, on St Michael’s Street. Then walk 2 minutes to the Verulamium Museum or to the other two attractions.

 

De Havilland Aircraft Museum: Salisbury Hall, London Colney, St Albans, AL2 1BU

Take the Metroline 84 bus from St Albans City Centre (St Peters Street), get off at Ridgehill opposite Salisbury Hall, then walk 5 minutes to the Museum.

If you arrive at St Albans City Railway Station you can also get the Metroline 84 bus from Alma Road. To get to Alma Road walk out of the train station, turning right and walk towards St Albans. Take the first road on the left at the traffic lights, this is Alma Road. Then walk to the first bus stop on the left hand side of the road to get the 84 bus.

Or taker the Uno 602 bus (towards Watford) from either St Albans City Centre or St Albans City Railway Station and get off at London Colney, Bell Land. Then walk 14 minutes to the Museum.

 

Willows Farm: Coursers Road, London Colney, St Albans, AL4 0PF

Take the Metroline 84 bus from St Albans City Centre or from Alma Road if you arrive at St Albans City Railway Station, and exit the bus at The Bull Pub in London Colney. This will stop at the bottom of Lowbell Lane. Walk up Lowbell Lane, which will take you to Willows Farm Office, staff will then direct you to the Farm Village admissions kiosk.

To get to Alma Road walk out of St Albans City Railway Station, turning right and walk towards St Albans. Take the first road on the left at the traffic lights, this is Alma Road. Then walk to the first bus stop on the left hand side of the road to get the 84 bus.

 

Butterfly World: Miriam Lane, Off Noke Lane, Chiswell Green, AL2 3NY

From St Albans City Centre or from St Albans City Railway Station take the Arriva 321 or the Greenline 724 (both towards Watford) to the Three Hammers Pub. From here you will need to cross the road and walk to the pub, then turn left into Chiswell Green Lane and walk for about 10 minutes before reaching the pedestrian entrance on your left hand side.

 

Royal National Rose Society Gardens: Gardens of the Rose, Chiswell Green Lane, Chiswell Green, AL2 3NR

From St Albans City Centre or from St Albans City Railways Station take either the Arriva 321 or the Greenline 724 both towards Watford and get off at the Three Hammers Pub in Chiswell Green. Then walk about 13 minutes to the Rose Gardens.

 

Redbournbury Mill: Redbournbury Lane, Redbourn Road, St Albans, AL3 6RS

From St Albans City Centre take the Centrebus 34 towards Dunstable and get off at Redbournbury, opposite Redbournbury Lane and then walk 5 minutes to the Mill.

 

Heartwood Forest: Near Sandridge Village (High Street), just north of St Albans

To get to Heartwood Forest you need to take a bus to Sandridge High Street. Once in Sandridge High Street follow the brown signs to Heartwood Forest.

From St Albans City Centre take the Centrebus 305, or the Centrebus 304 or the Uno 657 to Sandridge High Street

From St Albans City Railway Station you can take the Centrebus 304 and the Uno 657 to Sandridge High Street.

 

Redbourn Village Museum: Silk Mill Lane, The Common, Redbourn, AL3 7NB

From St Albans City Centre or St Albans City Railway Station take the Uno 657 towards Redbourn, get off at the Cricketers on West Common, Redbourn, then walk about 9 minutes to the Museum.

Or from St Albans City Centre or St Albans City Railways Station get the Centrebus 34 towards Dunstable and then get off at The Chequers on St Albans Road, Redbourn and then walk about 14 minutes to the museum.

 

Sopwell Nunnery: Cottonmill Lane by Old Sopwell Gardens, St Albans, AL1 2BY

It is probably quickest and easiest to get to Sopwell Nunnery by walking. From St Albans City Centre it is about a 16 minute walk away. From St Albans Abbey Train Station it is about a 9 minute walk.
